President

Lance Bushie is an emergency management professional with over 30 years’ experience in senior management, leadership and training roles. Lance started his career in 1989 when he joined the Peace River Fire Department. He progressively rose through the ranks of the department and was promoted to Director of Protective Services/Regional Fire Chief for the Town of Peace River and the County of Northern Lights and later Fire Chief for the Town of High River. Recently Lance accepted the Fire Chief position of Canmore Fire Rescue in Canmore, Alberta.

Lance has 12 years of experience instructing live fire dynamics and is a Train-the-trainer with the suite of Draeger Live Fire trainers. He was heavily involved in the organization and teaching live fire dynamics at the Northern HEAT conference in Peace River.  

Lance is also Senior Associate with Sandhurst Consulting, teaching ICS Canada (Incident Command System) courses and designing/evaluating emergency management exercises across Canada.

Lance holds a Masters Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, majoring in Global Leadership from Royal Roads University Additionally, a Post Graduate Diploma in Disaster and Emergency Management from Royal Roads University.

Tim brought his wealth of experience to Trident 4 years ago. Tim’s fire service career started with Toronto Fire Services 20 years ago and has spent the majority of his career working in some of the busiest technical rescue stations in the city. Currently, he is a qualified acting Captain and Swift Water Rescue Training Instructor with Toronto Fire Services.  Outside of Toronto Fire Services, Tim has spent 25 years volunteering within his community: joining the ski patrol, COMRA Marine Rescue Association in Oshawa, and with the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Central & Arctic Region (CCGA C & A). With the CCGA C & A he has held various positions such as SAR Instructor, Manager of Training and Operations Manager.  Additionally, he provides risk management solutions for a large insurance brokerage that insures high-risk recreational activities and is the Operations Director with an event medical company provides services at mass gatherings, marathons and music festivals.

BYRON CHARBONNEAU, P.ENG

INSTRUCTOR, TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Byron is a Professional Engineer licensed in both Alberta and Ontario, with over 15 years of experience in mechanical engineering. For the last 10 years of his career, Byron has worked with the fire service with a focus on designing, building, and implementing live fire training equipment for Fire Departments and Fire Schools across North America.  Byron held roles as Senior Project Engineer, and Sales Engineer with Draeger Safety Canada Ltd.  His projects included: live fire training simulators and container structures, mobile live fire training units, exterior trainers, confined space entry/rescue, SCBA confidence mazes, and portable fire trainers.  In the latter stages of these roles, Byron consulted with many Fire and City professionals who were working to develop their own training centres, in order to help them determine the site requirements and define the equipment and infrastructure to suit their needs.  Byron also served on the NFPA 1402 Technical Committee, and helped write the upcoming Standard for Fire Service Training Centres.  He is well versed on the technical requirements on many fire training props and structures, and can speak to the advantages and disadvantages of the equipment offered by a number of manufacturers.

In addition to Byron’s engineering career, he was also a paid on call firefighter for Greater Napanee Emergency Services.  He received training during the county-wide recruit program that aligned with NFPA 1001, FF1 and FF2, as Ontario made the transition to adopt NFPA standards. In 2014, he was selected as one of a small group of people from the department to be trained to NFPA 1041, Level 1. In addition to attending fire calls and training nights, Byron also trained and competed with Napanee’s FireFit team.

Over his years working with live fire equipment, and working as a firefighter, Byron has delivered and supported numerous training sessions and events, from ongoing education during training nights, to delivering operation and maintenance training for complex props, to contributing to large scale, live fire training events at fire conferences.
